Why you should try Epiphany as your default browser with GNOME 2.14

In the GNOME philosophy, we want applications that do their job, only their job, and we want those to do it perfectly.

Epiphany's job is to browse the web. Only browsing the web. But browsing the web in a GNOME fashioned way.

Simple, ergonomic

Epiphany just follows your GNOME preferences. No need to handle themes, icons, behavior. It's not just integrated into the desktop, it is fully part of your desktop.

Epiphany follows the GNOME guidelines about usability. You don't have to learn how to use Epiphany. Epiphany just speaks your language.

Just works !

The beautiful thing about Epiphany is that it simply works !

You want to download some files? Click and download them. A small manager will appear and allow you to track your downloads. Download finished ? The manager disappears. No need to clean up a manager full of downloads from the last 6 months nor manually close the window. It allows you to control your downloads and nothing more.

You mistyped an URL? A server is not responding? An unobstrusive error is displayed in the window, allowing you to seamlessly continue your navigation in other tabs or to search for the page in Google Cache.

There's no need for hundreds of options and two hours of tweaks before your browser is ready for use. Epiphany works perfectly out of the box and offers an easy, and yet quite complete, options dialog. Your mother will eventually be able to configure her browser herself.

Enjoy the web

Of course, Epiphany offers you all the features you would expect from a modern browser in order to fully enjoy your web experience.

Open as many pages as you want by middle-clicking on the link. The link will be open in a new tab. Tabs handling is very easy and intuitive. You can even reorder them by a simple drag-n-drop. Try it !

Epiphany has a simple but effective popup blocker. As soon as a popup is blocked, a small icon appear in the bottom-left corner of your browser. Want to see the blocked window ? Simply enable "Popup Windows" in the "View" menu.

Epiphany uses the latest version of the Gecko engine also used by Firefox 1.5. It closely follows the W3C standard and allows a lot of nice things like out-of-the-box SVG support, totem plugin for multimedia contents, ...

Forget your bookmarks jungle !

Every web addict knows the feeling of "bookmarks jungle" you have after a few months of browsing. You are searching for the gnome forum but have you put it in "forums" or in "gnome" ? Was it in "Free Software" or "Linux" ?

No problem anymore with Epiphany. Simply "tag" your bookmark.

You can type your tags. If the topic doesn't already exist, a dropdown menu will appear and allow you to create it. You can also simply choose in the existing topics list. Based on your bookmarks' list, Epiphany will try to guess which topics you would choose and put them at the top of the list. In this case, Epiphany suggested the topics "Gnome" (which is good) and "Ubuntu" (which is wrong).

Tip : try to type a topic name into your address bar and look at the dropdown menu...

Advanced tip : If the URL of one of your bookmark contains the string "%s", it's considered as search engine. On your favourite search engine, do a search on "%s" then add the bookmark. In the bookmarks editor, right click on this one and choose to show it on toolbar. Tada !

Extensions

Often, advanced users need more features. For this purpose, Epiphany allows you to enable a lot of different plugings. No "weather at Moskow" plugin nor "In-Your-browser-3D-tetris". Only useful plugins specifically designed to enhance your navigation experience.

Enable the ad blocker extension and enjoy, without any further configuration, lighter and faster web pages.

An Atom or RSS feed is available on the page ? The News Feed Subscription plugin allows you to quickly add (in one click) the feed to your favourite feeds reader (Liferea for instance). Manage and read your feeds is not the Epiphany's job, so Epiphany chooses to outsource it.. Does his job and does it well !

Of course, there is much more : greasemonkey, gestures, ...

Epiphany everyday

Switching to Epiphany is sometimes difficult for advanced surfers used to their browser. But give to Epiphany only one full week to convince you. It's worth it. With Epiphany, you will feel at home everywhere on the web !

Epiphany, the whole web is now part of your desktop.

It reminds me the article I wrote when I first discovered Epiphany. I switched to Epiphany because Firefox 1.0.x on Ubuntu was just too slow. I have tried Firefox 1.5 when it came out, but switched back to Epiphany because of the greater experience it gives me when I browse the Web. Seriously, Epiphany kicks asses!

I use lots of tabs and this is where Epiphany breaks for me. I find it annoying to have to click a little arrow ten times to cycle through my tabs. A simple about:config setting to control how my tabs scale would be fine for me. If there were lots of tabs I would prefer if they got smaller ala Firefox. Or at least create a second row of tabs if someone didn't want the width of the tabs to change.

Marius: gnome-keyring is top priority for next release, it just isn't ready yet now.

B.Atoms: Epiphany is designed for simple yet effective uses, if you use a lot of tabs, don't feel guilty about using firefox Variable width tabs are just not ideal when you have a handful of them. Firefox is removing variable width too.

kikidonk, B.Atoms: The tab handling is something that Epiphany simply can't change because it depends on GTK. We know the situation is not ideal, but you can still always use the Tabs menu instead of clicking on the arrows!

It's annoying that Epiphany doesn't focus the location field when opening a new window or tab.

Why can't Ctrl-tab be used as a next-tab shortcut. I don't see why i'll have to reach the page up button.

The only detail I'm uncomfortable with Epiphany is the cookies configuration. I know the basic settings are there, but I use to navigate with all cookies denied except for the ones I have in my white list. Are there any plans to make an extension with white/black lists of cookies depending on the site? It would be amazing if it could be aplicable to javascript too.

Anyway, in all the other aspects, Epiphany rocks!

Sous Firefox, j'ai pris l'habitude regrouper mes marque-pages par centres d'intêrets et une option permet de lancer tous les marque-pages d'un coup dans des onglets ("ouvrir dans des onglets").

antistress > dans l'éditeur de bookmarks, clic droit sur une catégorie et choisit de le faire apparaitre dans la toolbar. Clique ensuite sur le boutton apparu. En bas, tu trouveras "Ouvrir dans des nouveaux onglets". J'utilise ça tout le temps.

Yes, Epiphany is a nice browser. Tried it recently after being annoyed at the non-HIG-ness of Firefox, and still haven't found a reason not to use it. The tab behavior is a bit annoying, but I get used to it... Just put stuff in a new window once in a while. Maybe it should be able to display 8 windows instead of 6 on a maximized 1024x768, but that's ok.

Karmstrup > you have to install it. On Ubuntu or Debian, simply : apt-get install epiphany-extensions

Then you will have a new menu entry in the "tools" menu.

I will love the way I can manage bookmarks (with tags is better :)), and the RSS plugin. I want to try the "monospace font for address bar" tip :D, I love monospace!

PS: The only reason I don't use epiphany is because I can't find fast the "X" of the current tab because the position is variable, I know, seems to be a stupid reason, but I think the "static x position" in firefox is better (IMHO of course).

By the way, Firefox has no reason to be the default Web navigator : of course, it's a GREAT navigator, with a GREAT community, but newbies don't need to install extensions and extra themes (maybe it doesn't exist on Epiphany because of his guideline who cares of the immersion in the GNOME environment). Also, there aren't many superficial users (I call them that way, don't ask me why..) who use RSS & Atom Feeds.

Thank you so much for this nice write-up. I didn't know, until looking at your screenshots, that you could group together bookmarks in the bookmarks bar (as is shown in the screenshot above where you have "planet," "gnome," "forum" bookmark groups on the bar). This is great!

I have not been using Epiphany for very long, only a few weeks really, but I was sold on it after only a few hours of use. It's mighty fine, second only to Camino IMO as the best browser around today.

Oh, regarding tabs, I don't mind that they don't shrink. I use ALT+n to access the tab I want, so I rarely have more than 9 or 10 tabs open anyway and I pretty much know where they are, even those that aren't visible. Tabbed browsing is great, but I think you can take it too far -- having 20 or 30 tabs open is too much of a good thing.

apt-get install epiphany-browser was ok so... let's start:

1. epiphany launched, I want to write some url in url bar but.. guess wha? 100 years old 'focus steal' bug still present in 2.14.0
I need to hit 'Ctrl+l' to move focus to address bar

(I'm a little dissapointed in this moment)

2. I opened 8 tabs... and then I hit middle button on my mouse and... I'm suprised because I don't see any new tab, again, again and then I realized that I have to scroll tabs to see more than 8 pages...

(now I'm little suprised)

And then another annoying surprise:

'Ctrl + PageUp' and 'Ctrl + PageDown' doesn't cycle through tabs..

3. now I want to try this 'superdupercool' bookmarks system in Epiphany - hmm maybe I can live with this system - but what about my existing bookmarks that I got in Firefox? Any way to import them?

4. hmm and then another ugly thing.. History... OMG how I hate 'pupups'

Please fix focus steal bug, do something with tabs, add tool that could allow me to import bookmarks from FFox, put history on sidebar, integrate toolbar with address bar... then maybe I'll replace FFox with Epiphany.

This is not needed when you set a blank page as your homepage. Epiphany assumes that if a page is loaded, you will want to focus the page and not the address bar.

This is a limitation of the GTK toolkit, but you can scroll through tabs very easily using the mouse wheel. An overview of all open tabs is in the Tabs menu.

Never heard of this problem. It should work, and it works for me.

The default setup makes it so that users can still view the URL even on low-resolution screens. If you like you can simply rearrange your toolbar with drag-n-drop (right click toolbar, Customize...)

Better get used to it since Firefox 2.0 will have it too If the 'x' is ugly, install another icon theme??

What exactly can Epiphany do about this? (You can set custom stylesheets in the Preferences if you want.)

Like he said, right click on toolbar, that's where Back,Forwar,Stop,Refresh,... buttons are.

Great article, I've been using Epiphany as my main browser for more than a year now and I'm happy that it's getting better and faster with every release.

@Marcin: you have nothing... just an typical first user lack of knowledge experience, filled with annoyances, nothing more.

Quick tip to new Epiphany users: give Epiphany a chance, maybe you won't like it at first but you'll eventually get used to small differences and then you'll be able to experience what Epiphany is and what it stands for.

I tried it,
I installed a greasemonkey-userscript (the gnome redux one),
it didn't work as it did in firefox, so I thought, well that's the sacrifice I've got to make,
so I wanted to remove it (that one userscript) again,

but there just isn't any option for it!

The only way to install a userscript is to right-click on the link,
and there is totally no management present.

Simplicity, OK, but this goes way too far!

Sij'ai bien compris, il est plus difficile de créer des extensions avec Epiphany qu'avec Firefox qui profite d'une interface XUL (oir par exemple www.georgenava.com/applau... )
Donc Epiphany n'aura jamais autant d'extensions que Firefox.
Pour les plus populaires, j'imagine que ça devrait être une question de temps..?

Autre sujet : sous Epiphany, je n'ai pas trouvé d'option pour forcer les liens à s'ouvrir dans des onglets plutot que d'ouvrir une nouvelle fenêtre : cette option existe ?

Hehhh then it plain sucks that in ubuntu my default homepage is: file:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html

Because then when I open Epiphany I got focus on page and not the address bar - but with this setting when I hit Ctrl+t to create new tab then this url is loaded and focus goes on page.

You can do three things with that:

1. when user creates new tab then do not load his 'homepage' in this new tab
2. when user creates new tab then put focus to address bar (and don't care about his 'homepage'
3. remove an ability to set any page other than about:blank as 'home'

This is definetly Epiphany bug.

This is a limitation of the GTK toolkit, but you can scroll through tabs very easily using the mouse wheel. An overview of all open tabs is in the Tabs menu.

But then you shouldn't put new tab on the end of the list - but open new tab as the neighbour.

For example I got:

Tab1, Tab2, Tab3, Tab4, Tab5, Tab6, Tab7, Tab8, Tab9

and I got focus on Tab2 and click on middle mouse button then Epiphany creates this:

This is confusing and wrong behaviour

You should change this and make Epiphany to create new Tab10 as here:

Tab1, Tab2, Tab10, Tab3, Tab4, Tab5, Tab6, Tab7, Tab8, Tab9

In this way I got chance to see what's going on when I do my 'middle click'

Never heard of this problem. It should work, and it works for me.

I don't think I really understand the problem...

History should be available in side panel not in separate 'popup' window such as bookmarks.. really ugly behaviour.

These popups opens as some random sized windows and really it's ugly to have two separate windows.

Please implement history and bookmarks in side panel as in FFox/IE/Opera.

The default setup makes it so that users can still view the URL even on low-resolution screens. If you like you can simply rearrange your toolbar with drag-n-drop (right click toolbar, Customize...)

Yet another cool but non intuitive functionality - something simmilar to famous '/' or 'Ctrl-l in open/save gtk dialog.

Please put this "Customize toolbars" to "Tools" menu.

What exactly can Epiphany do about this? (You can set custom stylesheets in the Preferences if you want.)

Epiphany should behave like most other browsers and set background to white by default.

You're not using any flaky plugins by chance? Otherwise I suggest you file a bug report.

I use Dapper - Epiphany and Epihpany extensions.. that's all - plugins... flash + java 1.5 but not at that moment.. it crashed with no reason.

Il paraît qu'on ne peut pas exporter les Favoris avec... Ce qui n'est pas très agréable pour ceux qui veulent changer de navigateur. Exemple : Epiphany vs FireFox.

In FF, I like to stick all my webcomics in a bookmark folder, and then load that by clicking "Open Bookmarks in Tabs..." at the bottom of the bookmark window. Is there any way to do that in Epiphany? I don't see one offhand, and the paucity of extensions doesn't appear to offer one.

Also, I like having the FF Bookmarks Toolbar folder appear on the main browser window, to provide convenient access to my most-used bookmarks; it doesn't appear Epiphany has any way to do that, or does one of the dozen or so extensions offer that? (None of them seem to, but I'm not inclined to enable all of them just in case.)

@Eric the Read: You can put individual bookmarks or topics on any toolbar, or create a new toolbar from the toolbar editor and put them there. Topic menus on the toolbar have an 'Open in New Tabs' option.

I also tried Epiphany, but just couldn't get used to the tab behaviour. No matter the size, i want them at all times on the screen! :D

This way, i sometimes "forget" what or how many tabs i have opened.

Back to firefox... :/

The catergory way to bookmarks is awesome. but the way it is implemented in epiphany is totally frustrating.

lets say you have things from 2 categories that are mixed in with some of the wrong things. and you want to create a new category, or move several things to a different category. it becomes a nightmare, because you can't Select a bunch of bookmarks and mass-edit their categories.

also, it's not clear weather or not deleting a bookmark just deletes it from one category, or globally. the program should make it clear to the user, that YES, this bookmark will be gone from both catergories. so, mabey there should be a command, remove from catergory. so you can remove Multiple bookmarks from a catergory without having to open each and every one, to remove it from a catergory.

Eric the Read, to load all the bookmarks of a tag at one time : in the bookmarks window, select all the bookmarks (with upcase key), right click and "Open in new tabs".

There is a reason why GNOME have lost to KDE and why it will lag behind it for years to come. GNOME's open dialog is one. Epiphany browser is another.

When it starts up, it looks just like any other browser. But when you try to actually use it, it kicks and screams and has everything the opposite way from what a normal user wants. Its navigation buttons are extra large, taking almost an inch in height on my monitor, with no way to resize them. Its preference menu is almost empty. You want no popups for certain pages? - NO, you can only disable popups for all or enable them for all. You want new pages to open in tabs instead of new windows? - NO, I haven't found an option for that yet.

And bookmarks... this is the true epiphany of stupidity. I wanted a simple toolbar with a couple of buttons which will take me to the bookmarked page. First I tried to add the toolbar - I went to View and then checked 'Bookmarks Bar' - ok so far, the toolbar appeared. But there is no way to add bookmarks to it. After I removed the unneeded search dialog, the toolbar is blank and can't be populated. Well, not loosing hope, I went to Edit -> Toolbars - a dialog appeared. But still no way to add bookmarks! Instead there is "Add a New Toolbar" button. As promised, it added an empty toolbar. But still I can't add anything to it! What is the use? And better yet - I can't remove this new toolbar! Now I have two empty toolbars, one of which I cannot remove. Wonderful! What were you thinking - that is if you did.

Epiphany is awesome! I it have used for many years like predetermined browser because Firefox was too slow in all distros that I use.
Actually, I use 2.26.1 version on Jaunty Jackalope and try Shiretoko (A.K.A. Firefox 3.5b4pre) like alternative browser. Epiphany has some bugs (e.g. the favicon extension doesn't work always), But the speed and stability compensate certain things. For example, try to open a webpage like Facebook in both browsers and will realize the light and stable that is.

Sorry but Epiphany is just too slow when compared to Firefox 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.10. For example, where FF takes 4 seconds to load a pagae Epipahny would take more than 10 seconds (average over several tries). Thanks, but no thanks. It may score better in the Acid3 test but performance counts for something too.
